Anthony and Jimmy have been friends for 30 years. They do everything together with their families. One of their favorite things to do together is fishing....and now fly fishing. They've been at it for a year or two and today got an introduction into saltwater fly fishing.....not saltwater fly catching.
We started before first light, setting them up with Orvis Clearwater, Access and H2's and a variety of fly lines and flies to use. I know, a great introduction, here cast this in the dark!, but the boys did great as we tried to fool the early risers with a micro popper and a Snake Fly. That didn't work too well. Then when we could see we went through reading the beach, casting and retrieving techniques, using a stripping basket, and strip striking and landing a fish on the beach and rocks.
These guys worked hard all morning and had fun doing it. We caught the incoming and outgoing tides and jumped a few towns and spots and.....didn't see or move a fish. We did see one micro striper caught on a spinning rod off the front of the groin.
We need a new batch of bait, and bass and albies, to start heading south and tight to the beach. The water temps climbed a tad over the last few days so this cold front and weather that's coming Monday coupled with a new moon should shake things up a bit.
These guys had a great time and did great, and did everything right, but it was just one of those days. Hopefully they will come back to the Jersey Shore and catch it when everything lines up and collides and the bite is on.
