Benn tough fishing for me the last bunch of outings. Definitely not last the last few Mays. Not only am I having a hard time finding the when I do I can't get them to bite on the flys. Yesterday I went up near Lambertville and tried some new spots. The nice thing was I was able to park the boat and get out and walk and wade which is my go to favorite way to fish. I feel I am just able to pick apart water better and I always feel like I did my best when doing it by foot.
With the rain, clouds, and cool nights the water remains just above 60 which I think is low for this time of year. It's a good temperature for the fish, not so much for the flyrodder. The river level is 12,600
cfs which is good. While I'm not seeing the wolf packs of smaller fish and even post-spawn fish there's enough around to keep the interest up for me. Fishing in your backyard is always better than having to drive an hour to the sand, or the inlets which seem to be loaded with bluefish this spring.
I'm not seeing any herring and I know the bass are opportunistic feeders so anything swimmy they will eat. There's white perch in the river and those are about peanut to mid bunker sized snacks.
I'm thinking one more boat trip before the weekend hits so it'll be a few days off without fishing which is fine by me. The outings have been a grind as of late although I am sure there's a few good ones around.
