11.14.11 Beach replenishment started in Monmouth Beach and going north
This week starts the beach replenishment project in Monmouth Beach. For all you surf fisherman who like to fish that sandbar and groin in front of and to the left of Little Monmouth...forget it. It will soon be gone. The 13 million dollar project will take four months to complete and add anbout 100 foot to the beach from Little Monmouth north to Big Monmouth. Today however, I saw surveyors out along the wall up to the first sunken groin at Central Road. Kayakers will have to find another place to ferry in to as large rocks have been placed to block their access to the beach.
In 2009 I did an assignment for The New York Times on the beach replenishment project at West End in Long Branch. Crazy money, crazy sand....all of that sand and more is gone today.
Vacuum and pump boat sits offshore pumping sand through a large metal pipe to the beach. The sand icobbling vacuumed up near the Sandy Hook channel and offloaded into a pipe floating offshore. Two boats rotate working around the clock.
This groin will be covered post beach replenishment.
All of this will be filled in down to Big Monmouth.
Found plenty of birds picking through the chocolate colored water down near Big Monmouth.
