02.02.22 Needed to get out and start the season......

After yesterday's post about "just getting out" it made me just want to do just that. I'm foaming at the mouth waiting for the first word of shad or herring entering the Delaware and the start of the season March 1st. But before then I'll be out fishing for whatever will bite a fly, smallmouth bass, schoolie stripers, walleye, or even an ice out muskellunge. Below is a fine specimen caught in Warren County.

Zach Merchant found this muskie under the ice

Today the air temps hit over 40 degrees and a quick drive north and I found less ice than downriver. At the start it was tough to find open water but I found nice moving water along the bank to air out a fly. Backcast wasn't a problem neither was the bottom, what was was the edge of the ice anchored up along the shore. While I didn't get a bite it was nice to be out, breathe the fresh air, clear my head, and enjoy the outdoors before heading back to the office. The river here is one of those places where you just never know what you may catch. Not only is it good to get out, its good to get out to scout areas especially with the low water we have now, but that will change come spring.

As you get ready for your season remember to renew your freshwater fishing license with trout stamp and your saltwater registration. And take a quick phone pic so you have proof for the man.
