03.22.23 A bass a day...

.....if only that could happen. Hit it before work today and caught the incoming tide which I haven't be able to catch so far this year. Conditions in all of the rivers and bays are finally starting to get good, not real good yet, but good. Lots of early catches and soon all, I mean all, of the boats will be out

in the Raritan Bay and posting lots of pictures of dead fish, or fish that will be dead, or fish that are meant to live and will wind up dead. And yes, ALL, of the dead ones will be between the slot limit of 28-38", because that's the legal slot size and what people can keep so they will keep. Basically it will just about wipe out those years class fish. So a 28 inch fish is about 6 years old and a 38" is about 12 years old. So, the 2011 through 2016 year class fish will be beat down, and have been since the new regulations, until we realize this can't continue. The slot has to be adjusted from time to time. It's not sustainable. Rant over.

It was nice to catch today. I wish it was like that everyday, well not really, as failure and frustration are part of the allure of the game. It was a small, mummichog-ish, type fly that worked. Couple striped bass before work with a sausage, egg and cheese and a large milk for $5 off a greasy food truck that was visiting the local construction site and my morning was made. The sandwich weighed about 8 pounds and the milk was fresh and ice cold....$5.00. That sandwich in the places I now frequent will run you at least $8 and the milk $3. It was a kinda throwback ironworker construction coffee break kind of goodness. I hope to catch that guy again one morning, along with some bass.
